CAPTURE WHAT YOU HEAR

Record. Review. Save.

Producers move sound constantly: browser to DAW, app to sampler, reference to project, preview to folder, tool to session. Music Catalog turns that detour into a direct capture step.

What it means technically

REC captures the selected Windows playback output. Stop to review the take, choose its name and folder, trim it or add fades. Save to add it to your library, or keep it as a draft for later. Device settings and protected playback can limit capture. Record audio you are authorized to use.

From playback to a reusable file.

A producer often needs to move a sound between a browser, a reference player and a project. System-audio capture gives that recording a place in the same library as your own renders.

  1. Select the Windows output device carrying the audio. Close unrelated playback and notification sources when you need a clean take.
  2. Start REC, play the passage and stop the recording. Review the result before naming it or adding it to a song or album.
  3. Use an available export format for the destination application. Keep a lossless working copy when further editing is planned.

Check before you continue

Capture follows the compatible Windows playback path. Device changes, exclusive playback and protected content can affect availability. It captures played audio rather than retrieving the original compressed source file. Use audio you are authorized to record.

Practical questions before choosing a workflow

What exactly does the REC function record?

REC records audio played through the compatible Windows output device you select. It is a recording of playback, not a copy of the original media file. Close notifications and unrelated applications if you want to avoid capturing their sounds.

Does recording bypass limits or protected playback?

No. Protected audio, exclusive playback modes and changes in the selected sound device can prevent a recording. Music Catalog is not a tool for defeating digital rights management, downloading inaccessible tracks or changing a service's licensing conditions.

Can I review the recording before adding it to my library?

Yes. Stop playback capture, listen to the take, choose a name and folder, make supported trims or fades, and decide whether to save it or leave it as a draft. Capture only audio you are permitted to record.

Why might REC show no sound?

Check that the correct Windows playback output is selected and that the audio is actually routed through it. Device changes, exclusive audio applications and protected sources can make loopback recording unavailable; this is not evidence of a missing music file.
